      Village deities are the patron deities or grama devata of village. They are found in almost all villages throughout India, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh in particular. Perhaps it would be more correct to call the book An Introduction to the Study Of the Village Gods of South India. The Village Gods Of South India details the rituals practiced in villages in South India.

It should be noted that the author was a Christian missionary, whose main objective was to convert people. Hence, the parts of the text where the author makes judgements and comparisons about the rituals, or what they mean, should not be taken too literally.
